Narmada Parikrama: Traversing the Divine Path

The Narmada River, also known as Rewa, is revered in Hinduism as a manifestation of the divine mother. Unlike other rivers, Narmada is considered so sacred that a mere sight of it is believed to cleanse the soul of sins. The significance of Narmada Parikrama is rooted in ancient scriptures and legends, which describe the river as having the power to purify and grant liberation (moksha). Undertaking the Parikrama is seen as an act of ultimate devotion and surrender to the divine.

Day 4: 7th January 2023

Our journey resumed on the fourth day with an early start at 7:30 AM, departing from Garudeshwar and heading towards the iconic Statue of Unity. This monumental statue, dedicated to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, stands as a symbol of unity and strength. At 182 meters, it is the world's tallest statue and was inaugurated in 2018. Sardar Patel, known as the "Iron Man of India," played a crucial role in the country's independence and the integration of princely states into a united India. The statue is not just a tribute to Patel's legacy but also a reminder of the power of unity and determination. The visit was both inspiring and humbling, reminding us of Patel’s immense contribution to India's unity.

After spending some reflective time at the Statue of Unity, we set off for Mandu at 10:00 AM. Along the way, we stopped for a hearty breakfast in Gujarat, enjoying the local flavors that fueled us for the day ahead.

Our journey then took us to the Panchalingeshwar Mandir in Malwai, Madhya Pradesh. This temple, known for its five Shiva lingams, is steeped in history and spirituality. The temple is an important pilgrimage site for devotees of Lord Shiva, who believe that offering prayers here brings immense blessings and divine grace. The serene ambiance of the temple provided a peaceful respite, allowing us to offer our prayers and soak in the divine energy.

Continuing our journey from Panchalingeshwar, we reached Mandu by 4:45 PM. Mandu, also known as Mandav, is a city rich in history and architectural marvels. The city, perched on a plateau in the Malwa region, was once the capital of the Parmar rulers during the 10th and 11th centuries. It later became a prominent seat of power under the Delhi Sultanate and the Mughal Empire.

Our first stop was the Bag Bahadur Mahal. This palace, built by Baz Bahadur, the last independent ruler of Mandu, stands as a testament to the region’s glorious past. The intricate architecture and historical significance of the Mahal left us spellbound. The palace, with its beautifully designed courtyards and halls, offers a glimpse into the luxurious lifestyle of the erstwhile rulers.

Next, we visited the Roopmati Mahal. This beautiful pavilion, built in honor of Rani Roopmati, offers panoramic views of the Narmada River and the surrounding landscape. The palace is renowned for its stunning architecture and scenic beauty. The history associated with the palace added a layer of enchantment to our visit.

As the evening set in, we headed to Jahaz Mahal for the light and sound show. The Jahaz Mahal, or "Ship Palace," was built by Sultan Ghiyas-ud-din-Khilji. Its unique design gives the illusion of a ship floating on water, as it is situated between two artificial lakes. The light and sound show narrated the rich history of Mandu, bringing to life the stories of its past rulers and the architectural brilliance of the era. The illuminated Jahaz Mahal against the night sky was a sight to behold.

As we moved forward, the physical journey along the Narmada was paralleled by an inner journey of reflection and growth. Each site visited and each story heard contributed to a deeper understanding of the cultural and spiritual fabric that the Narmada Parikrama is woven from.

Our day concluded with a stay at the Gurukripa Hotel, where we reflected on the day's journey and prepared for the next leg of our pilgrimage. The blend of historical exploration and spiritual experiences made this day a significant chapter in our Narmada Parikrama, as we continued to traverse the divine path.

The serene recitation of the Stotra provided a profound spiritual beginning to my special day.

After a hearty breakfast at 8:30 AM, we set off to explore the rich historical and spiritual heritage of the region. We visited the Jami Masjid, an impressive mosque showcasing the architectural brilliance of the Malwa Sultanate. Interestingly, while the monument is named Jama Masjid, our local guide and historical readings revealed that it was originally the Raj Darbar of the ruler. The monument's architecture clearly indicates its origins as a royal court, and it was only later named a Masjid.

We then explored Gadheshah ki Dukan, the ancient ruins of a local market that was famous in its time. The vibrant atmosphere and colorful displays offered a glimpse into the local culture and commerce of the past. We also visited the Baneshwar Mandir and the Shalivahan Mandir, two significant temples that added to the spiritual richness of our journey. The Narmada View Location offered a breathtaking view of the river, providing a moment of tranquility and reflection.

A significant highlight of our visit to Maheshwar was the Sudarshan Chakra, also known as the Sahastra Bahu Mandir or Rajrajeshwar Sahastra Arjun. This temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, features a thousand-armed statue of the deity, symbolizing protection and power. Our guide, Sushil Kumar, shared fascinating stories and historical insights, enriching our understanding of these sites.

In the evening, we participated in the Narmada aarti at Maheshwar, a mesmerizing ritual that filled us with spiritual fervor. The Mahamrtunjay Rathyatra added a festive atmosphere, celebrating the divine presence of the Narmada.

After the aarti, we explored the Maheshwar Market, where everyone in our group purchased handloom sarees for their loved ones. Even though I'm not great at choosing sarees, I dared to buy one for my mom, and she loved it afterward. The market offered a vibrant mix of local crafts and textiles, perfect for souvenirs and gifts.

It houses a massive Shiva lingam, one of the largest in India, standing at an impressive height of 7.5 feet. The temple was commissioned by King Bhoja of the Paramara dynasty, who envisioned it as a grand center of worship.
